H. Lawrences The Rocking Horse Winner are stories that are, on a superficial level, about luck and how that luck turns out to be rather unfortunate and unlucky. On deeper levels, both stories illustrate problems at the heart of the human condition: Jackson displays mans ignorance and psychopathy through adherence to a senseless and violent tradition; Lawrence displays mans inability to be satisfied with material possessions and shows how love is ultimately self-sacrificing.
